Message from Kevin Field
Dear MPYO Members,
Just a few weeks away now from our third camp of the season to which I am very much looking forward. As ever, repertoire for all to 'chew on' and digest in a very busy week. I hope you have all had a chance to listen to the repertoire, not least the symphony as this will clarify so much prior to the first rehearsal and I would welcome you all to get hold of a recording prior to the camp; this is essential.
Listening is only part of the preparation. Going through all the music and knowing the phrases, how to breathe and with what fingering and in what position is crucial. Learning repertoire in the first 2 days of the camp is not on - it slows us down in all terms of music development - and as we are getting to the business end of the season, the repertoire will become ever more challenging.
Which leads me onto the December tour to East Malaysia. It is expected there will be four concerts, two public and two school concerts with the additional opportunity for some groups to perform some chamber repertoire in outreach concerts. This will all be clarified soon. In the meantime please do start looking at the 5th Symphony of Shostakovich which will be featured in the main concerts. In the schools concerts we will be revisiting some repertoire from previous camps, most notably, Carmen.
Chamber music will be a feature in this coming camp too but there will not be any conducting classes as we have to complete internal auditions.
These auditions are an opportunity for me and the team to gather more information about you and your short to medium term plans. They are conducted in the manner of an interview, all very relaxed. It is interesting to calibrate who can prepare what in the time available. It is also interesting to note that everyone over 20 has to really think exactly how old they are now!
I am gaining a picture of who will be leaving in January and August 2009 and 2010, yes; we do plan that far ahead, as this will affect our intake from the forthcoming national auditions in November. Please do take a few applications for you friends (of other instruments!). In spite of this foresight people tend to leave at short notice and to all those who will not be with us this August I wish you well with all your plans. Please do keep in touch, we'll miss you.
See you all soon.
