  Jazz Stars perform with MPYO!

Fritz Renold – saxophone, Randy Brecker – trumpet, Danny Gottlieb – drums, Reggie Hamilton – bass, Christian Jacob - piano

Under the direction of Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor, Kevin Field, the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO) plays two, not to be missed, jazz concerts at the Dewan Filharmonic PETRONAS on Tuesday 15th and Wednesday 16th June.

Performing alongside the MPYO will be Fritz Renold and the Bostonian Friends, featuring the jazz legend, Randy Brecker on trumpet. The concert includes two works for orchestra by the great Duke Ellington and a world premiere from Fritz Renold for jazz quintet and orchestra entitled, ‘Suite Nusantara’, a five movement celebration representing the myriad of Malaysian music culture, past and present.

Alongside Randy Brecker, the Bostonian Friends include some of the leading jazz and session musicians from the USA, among them: Danny Gottlieb on drums; Reggie Hamilton on bass; Christian Jacob on piano; Steve Reid on trumpet and Fritz Renold on saxophone and composer of Suite Nusantara. The programme will also feature members from the Encounter Jazz Programme.

The concerts are the finale to a 10 day long music camp where members of MPYO and the EJP have worked intensively side by side with the Bostonian Friends. Fritz Renold said: “I’m going to enjoy working with MPYO and Kevin together with my group. The young people are our future. Fostering the future generation is worth it. Any input in that direction is to pass on a legacy of creativity for future musicianship - there is simply no better way than professionals working alongside the youth. The combination of jazz and classical music is the future of music on a global scale in my opinion because of the merging of structured music with open improvisation. Combined, it is a new territory that calls for keener awareness from composers and players.”

In a season that sees the MPYO performing a variety of music genres, Kevin Field said; “The modern musician is required to play any style of music nowadays and it is vital these young musicians are exposed to a range of music from the outset. I have worked with Fritz in Switzerland and was very keen to get his bandstand learning and jazz festival, ‘Jazzaar’ over to Malaysia. This is major event in the history of the MPYO and for its members and audience alike, it will be a very special experience.”
