Advice
Auditions can be a very challenging process, even for the seasoned professional musicians. Here are a few practical suggestions to help you get the most out of your audition.
| Guidelines |
Choose your audition pieces carefully to best show off your abilities. You are not required to present a complete work; a selected passage from a longer piece is acceptable. |
| Preparing |
Consult with your private teacher to choose solos which best demonstrate your musical and technical abilities. There is no advantage in choosing a new piece or a piece which is too difficult or elementary. |
Go through the orchestral excerpts with your teacher. Practise the excerpts under and over the tempo, with different articulations and play the excerpts in random order so that you are prepared if you are asked to play them differently. |
Practise and work with a tuner and metronome. Record yourself playing the pieces is also a good way to judge your playing. |
Sight-reading is a part of the audition. Practice sight-reading with your teacher at each lesson. |
Mock auditions are useful in helping to prepare mentally and physically for the real audition experience. |
Make sure you have had plenty of sleep the night before your audition and are mentally as well as musically ready. Make a check list and pack all the items you intend to take with you ( sheet music, rosin, spare strings, valve oil, mallets, sticks, bottle of water, light lunch etc ). Wear clothing that is comfortable and will allow you freedom of movement. |
| Getting There |
Check for the directions to your audition venue and plan your journey carefully. We recommend that you arrive at least 20 minutes before your scheduled audition time. |
| While Waiting |
Sign-in, tune and warm up in the waiting room. |
Do ask questions. We will be happy to help you and make you feel as comfortable as possible. |
Focus on yourself and do not get distracted by other players in the waiting room. |
| The Audition |
Breathe deeply and relaxed. Focus on the music and your performance. |
Do not fluster or stop if you make a mistake, keep going. |
Due to time constraint, the panel may not be able to hear each piece in its entirety. |
Smile and enjoy yourself, remember that the panel wants you to play well as much as you do. |
Regardless of the outcome of your audition, look on it as good learning experience. Not getting a place does not mean that you are not a good musician. |
